The On Being Project is a conversation that has been unfolding over decades. It is most closely associated with On Being with Krista Tippett, the Peabody award-winning show that began on public radio in 2001. Ms. Tippett's body of work is rooted in spiritual and scientific inquiry, social healing, the arts, and the search for a wise and graceful life. But after taking her show off the air in 2022, Ms. Tippett found herself face-to-face with a different kind of inquiry.
Design question
Through twenty years of recorded interviews, On Being became known for illuminating the mystery of the art of living with questions like: What does it mean to be human? How do we want to live? Who will we be to each other? But one final question remained—how might the archives carry on in the future?
Design response
In many ways, this project had an audience of one: Krista Tippett. Her highly produced audio libraries were evidence of a certain kind of love, faith, and commitment to the context of spirituality. Her interviewing style, grounded in homework and humility, was not only a means for revealing the wisdom of others, but a wisdom lesson in itself—on how to actively, generously receive. It was this lesson in particular—how to become wise, how to receive—that became the basis of a custom pedagogy premised on transformational learning theory. This unique pedagogy then became the basis for designing a new venture, the Lab for the Art of Living, as well as offerings that would live within it.
